What is better for a basketball backboard acrylic or tempered glass?
we are trying to find a new basketball system but we dont know what type of backboard to get acrylic or tempered glass
First off, you most likely already looking at polycarbonate versus acrylic. some people use these interchangably. they are different chemically. the problem with plastics is that they get brittle over time. even the polycarb with UV absorbers in it is going to weather. It is going to get old, it is going to break and crack.
the glass is far stronger than the plastic. as long as you don't chip the corner, it will never break (with a basketball). This is the way to go.

If you want a clear backboard that will not be heavy or break, then avoid glass and acrylic. Instead use a polycarbonate such as LEXAN made by GE, which is nearly unbreakable. It is used by NASCAR to avoid windshield breakage.
The cost for each backboard is about $150 for quarter inch thick and $300 for half inch (my personal favorite) and you will have to have it custom cut (Home Depot or Lowe's will usually be able to order it for you).
It is well worth it not having to ever replace it. EVER!!!

You know what these dudes know alittle about what they are talking about. Ok first go with a glass backboard. Where are you going to mount the basketball hoop, It all depends. What I would do is just go to like Wal-Mart or K-mart or even Target or a sporting goods store more expensive but more variety. Don't just go for a backboard go with the whole thing it is cheaper and less pain in the butt. Also glass backboard is a regulated basketball hoop. I play basketball alot and had quit a few basketball hoops before. Glass makes it easier to play it is just better. You can kiss it off the glass with the acrylic backboard you can but no the same effect, if you play quite a bit than you know what i am talking about listen to me. IF you have any other questions just ask me some.

I can only speak from personal experience. I have had two acrylic polymer transparent backboards by Huffy, and they cracked from shooting threes. Tempered glass would probably be a lot pricier, and heavier to mount, but if you've got the money and the mount, man I'd do that.
