can i buy just a new basketball backboard or do i have to replace the whole thing?
i broke my backboard and i'm wondering if i can just replace the backboard or do i have to buy a whole new thing.
You can find replacement backboards. Search google for replacement basketball backboard.
Also, you could simply make one yourself. In high school I made my own from basic materials at the lumber yard.

You just said it….. it's "broke". Unless you can weld, or are a wiz with wood/plexiglass, i'd say you're out of luck and out of pocket.

it is so easy to make your own replacesment for cheap. just remove the old peice of whatever it is and use as a pattern. beg, borrow, steal of buy something from home depot plus a little saw and cut out your replacement. it is easy. actuallly you could use four stop signs to make a backboard. hell, anything would work. what has the world come to? we made out own rings and backboards in the fifties, what is the matter with this generation?? damn!!!!

Backboard are available at your local discount store, be it Wal-Mart, Kmart, or Target, or the sporting goods store. If you have not damaged the post, the backboard alone can be replaced.
My Dad made my backboard as a kid just out of half of a wooden folding table, with the rim bolted directly through the backboard into the pole. Your options, as well, are limited only by your imagination if you want to make a backboard.
