Attaching a basketball backboard to a separate pole?

i saved a nearly new basketball hoop pole that went with a 44″ backboard. the backboard cracked and the base is damaged. i recently bought a 48″ backboard only. can i attach it to the original pole meant for a 44″ board? what hardware would i need?
