Basketball Backboards - Which Backboards Are Best?
Many people think that the most important part of a basketball system is the goal. After all, that is where the scoring takes place; but actually the basketball backboard is just as vital. Backboards assist in scoring, give chances for rebounds, and help players hone their skills. Not all backboards are alike. There are many different types available, and a huge variation in the quality of different retailers. I discovered a site called www.TopHoops.com that offers the following types of basketball backboards from leading and respected industry manufacturers. Plus, the sound warranty puts my mind at ease when making an investment in my game.
The ultimate backboard is made out of tempered glass. Glass backboards are NBA regulation style. The pros know that playing with a glass backboard gives the best ball interaction. Tempered glass is dent proof, scratch proof, and shatter resistant. There are no worries about the ball hitting a dent or divot. This ensures fair play for all. Tempered glass also has also no vibration, returning the ball instantly.
Glass backboards are considered the best, but they are also the most expensive. A good alternative to glass backboards are acrylic backboards. Acrylic backboards look and feel like real glass. They offer a similar ball interaction, though the vibrations and ball return speed are different. Acrylic backboards can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Fiberglass backboards also give the look of glass, but are much more economical. They are more prone to dents, but overall they give a good surface for lay-ups and rebounds. Only the most skilled player will notice the different between fiberglass and tempered glass. Fiberglass is a good choice for moderate play.
For outside home or community hoops steel or aluminum backboards are good choices. They do not have the same ball interaction and can dent or scratch, but they are durable. Steel and aluminum both work well in all types of weather and are ideal for aggressive play.
Once you know what type of players will be using your hoop and where the games will take place, choosing a basketball backboard can be simple. Choose your provider and backboard style carefully, and watch your game play improve.

I got a used basketball backboard but handling it made my hands and ams itchy. Is it safe? Can it be sealed?
I assume that sun and rain have degraded the fiberglass surface and it is now shedding tiny shards. I do not want my son showered with these fiberglass bits each time the ball hits the backboard. I don’t want anyone inhaling them or getting them on their skin, hair, clothes, etc. I’m wondering whether some kind of liquid acrylic sealant could be sprayed or brushed onto the surface of the backboard. Or should it be discarded?
yup, clear spray ppaint would do the trick, the only thing is DO NOT handle the board with out protection, I only got a bit of fiberglass in my eye, and costed me about 5k to get rid of it. make sure you have a mask, goggles, gloves and have cover all your body surfaces.
what can i do to fix cracked plexiglass in a basketball backboard?
Is there some sort of product that fixes cracks that would do this job?
On the backside of the backboard I would put hardware cloth cut in a strip over the crack. Make sure it is wide enough to over lap the crack at least an inch on each side. Use two part epoxy to completely cover the hardware cloth. When it dries it will act as reinforcement. In the front I would gouge the crack so that it forms a slight “V”. I would fill the “V” with epoxy. In order to increase the holding power of the epoxy, I would rough up any plexiglass surface that will have epoxy on it with sandpaper. I would also make sure that all the surfaces are dry and clean, rubbing alcohol works well for this. Good Luck!!
How do I fix my wooden basketball backboard?
It’s a neighborhood goal, it appears someone was hanging on the rim and the bolts were stripped from the metal bracket thing at the top of the actual backboard (not the rim). Since it appears to be stripped i don’t think buying new bolts would fix it. Right now the whole backboard slants downward and is completely useless. http://www.goal-posts.net/media/bas… (example, top part of the backboard) Any easy fixes?
You may have to replace the backboard and/or the metal bracket frame. If the bracket is bent, you can check around the neighborhood and the newspaper to see if someone is selling an old one at a good price, or check with the local junkyards. Replacing the wooden backboard may help, but if the bracket is bent, replacing it seems like your best bet.
how should i keep a crack in my fiberglass basketball backboard from cracking further?
Add a fiberglass patch to the back side. You can get it at home depot.
What should I get to replace a shattered basketball backboard and broken rim?
My backboard has many holes in it and I am no longer able to use it. The rim is also broken and I was wondering how I could purchase just a backboard and rim and net? I would also like to know how I would know which one to get and if it would fit because I do not want to replace the pole that is cemented underground.
how about a new net? lol or shhhh! not so loud, try a new backboard and rim, dont tell any1 i told u keep it a secret, no1 would be able to figure that out
what the normal size for a basketball backboard?
because i want to install a basketball backboard net so how high does it have to be for 13 yr old
An official high school or college backboard measures 42" x 72". Any of our hoops that are in 300 series (P306A, P305A, P305S) have a 42" x 72" size backboard. Our other goals smaller backboards.
